Display of materials
The selection and display of materials is an important consideration when planning the design of a classroom. In the Reggio Emilia Approach, educators take great care in selecting the materials for student use. Materials are selected that offer children many possibilities and affordances, both within the materials' intrinsic attributes and its expressive potentials (Fraser, 2012).
When materials are displayed in a neat, orderly and attractive manner, student interest in literacy activities is increased (Curtis & Carter, 2003). Lewin-Benham (2011) calls the process of examining every single material in the classroom 'detailing'. She argues that by paying attention to how every single marker, puzzle piece, and object is displayed, students will be able to choose items and make connections more independently.
